Citizens with Disabilities
Governor Youngkin became the first Governor in recent Virginia history to try to end priority one crisis in Virginia. (https://www.wric.com/news/virginia-news/youngkin-vows-to-shrink-wait-list-for-developmental-disability-services/)
Citizens should not have to quit jobs in order to save disability benefits. They shouldn't need to disclose the condition or be restricted from the reasonable accommodations to vote or to participate in other civic affairs. The income ratio of benefits needs to be overhauled.
Max Fisher's Policy Position on Citizens with Disabilities in Virginia
**Introduction**
As your candidate for the House of Delegates, I am committed to ensuring that all citizens of Virginia, including those with disabilities, have equal access to opportunities, rights, and protections. It is essential that we create an inclusive environment that respects the dignity of every individual, particularly in areas such as voting access, public safety, and community awareness. I believe that by working collaboratively with organizations like the Autism Society of Northern Virginia and the Arc, we can drive meaningful change and enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
**Policy Position: Empowering Citizens with Disabilities**
1. **Ensuring Access to Voting**
- **Accessible Voting Locations**: Advocate for all polling places to be fully accessible to individuals with disabilities, ensuring that physical barriers are removed and that necessary accommodations are provided.
- **Enhanced Voting Assistance**: Support the implementation of training programs for poll workers to assist voters with disabilities, ensuring they receive the help they need in a respectful and sensitive manner.
- **Vote by Mail Options**: Promote expanded access to mail-in voting and electronic voting solutions for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to participate in the electoral process conveniently and securely.
2. **Training for Law Enforcement**
- **Specialized Training Programs**: Implement comprehensive training for police officers on how to interact with individuals with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum. This training should focus on de-escalation techniques, communication strategies, and understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
- **Collaboration with Advocacy Groups**: Work closely with organizations such as the Autism Society of Northern Virginia to develop training modules that reflect best practices and the needs of the community.
3. **Community Awareness and Education**
- **Public Awareness Campaigns**: Launch campaigns to educate the public about disabilities, particularly autism, to foster understanding and acceptance. This will help reduce stigma and promote inclusivity within our communities.
- **Workshops and Events**: Partner with local organizations, such as the Autism Society of Northern Virginia and the Arc, to host workshops and community events that raise awareness about disability rights and resources available for individuals and families.
4. **Legislative Advocacy and Support**
- **Support for Existing Legislation**: Continuously support and advocate for legislation that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities, ensuring that laws are enforced and that individuals are aware of their rights.
- **Collaboration with Advocacy Groups**: Maintain a strong relationship with the Autism Society of Northern Virginia and the Arc to identify gaps in policy and work together to propose new legislation that addresses the needs of individuals with disabilities.
5. **Enhancing Community Resources**
- **Increased Funding for Support Services**: Advocate for increased funding for programs and services that support individuals with disabilities, including vocational training, mental health resources, and independent living programs.
- **Accessible Transportation Solutions**: Promote initiatives that enhance accessible transportation options for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they can travel safely and independently within their communities.
**Conclusion**
Every citizen deserves the right to participate fully in society, and we must ensure that individuals with disabilities are empowered and supported in every aspect of their lives. By enhancing access to voting, providing specialized training for law enforcement, increasing community awareness, advocating for protective legislation, and enhancing resources, we can create a more inclusive Virginia for all.
I am dedicated to working alongside the Autism Society of Northern Virginia, the Arc, and other advocacy groups to make Virginia a model for disability rights and support. Together, we can build a future where every individual, regardless of ability, is respected and valued.
